Toronto has hit a new milestone in the COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

Mayor John Tory confirms that at some point over the weekend, 50-percent of all adults living in the city of Toronto have received a first dose.

“I’m sure yes because of we knew it would happen sometime on Saturday or Sunday, and I know the number was 1.445 million doses that had been administered, so yes, sometime over the weekend we passed the 50-percent mark,” said Mayor Tory who also cautioned that we’re not celebrating but moving toward the next goal set by Premier Ford of having 65-percent of all adults in Ontario vaccinated with a first dose of COVID vaccine.

More people in Ontario become eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine this week.

The overall age for booking an appointment province-wide is expected to be dropped from 50 to 40. Individuals with “at risk” health conditions such as heart disease and dementia also become eligible.

Over the weekend, hundreds of pharmacies, mostly in the GTHA, began offering Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to people 18 and over.

Meantime, two million more doses of Pfizer vaccine are set to arrive in Canada this week while more Moderna shots are not expected until next week after a shipment of one million doses arrived ahead of schedule last week.
