The federal government is investing $12B to help Ontario fund four major transit routes. Infrastructure Minister Minister Catherine McKenna calls the agreement ‘historic’.

“When complete, over 6 million people across the GTA will have better access to Toronto services, with public transit routes covering 1,200 kilometres and with light rail vehicles producing near zero emissions, this is key to reducing emissions in the transportation sector and driving Canada to net zero emissions by 2050,” said McKenna.

The money will fund four subway projects in the G-T-A: Ontario Line, Eglinton Crosstown West, Scarborough extension and Yonge Street North. The funding will also fund one rapid-transit project in Hamilton.

Mayor John Tory calls it a ‘great day for transit’ in the city.

“It’s about better transit across the city, it’s about jobs, it’s about a greener Toronto is about connecting people living in what have become marginalized communities to the opportunity that is Toronto, from today going forward.”

In Toronto, the four projects will support over 16,000 jobs and by 2041, will have a total daily ridership of over 620,000.
