Members of Toronto’s Board of health are calling on the governing Ford PCs at Queen’s Park to reopen outdoor recreational amenities that were banned when the current provincial stay at home order went into effect.

Board Chair Joe Cressy says people need ways to get outside and enjoy the outdoors safely.

And Councillor Josh Matlow calls the restrictions on outdoor amenities absurd.

“They don’t make sense from a public policy perspective and certainly they’re not backed by any science based advice that I’m aware of,” Matlow explains.

In fact, the government’s own science advisers have criticized the restriction of outdoor activities, saying they will not control COVID-19 and disproportionately harm children and those who don’t have access to their own green space.

The province’s top doctor David Williams said Monday, he is open to talking about modifications on outdoor amenities.

The stay at home order, which currently includes a ban on golf, tennis and basketball, is expected to be extended beyond the current deadline of May 20th.
