Political leaders in this country are weighing in on violence that broke out at competing demonstrations in support of the Israelis and Palestinians in Toronto and Montreal.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau posted Sunday night everyone has the right to assemble peacefully and express themselves freely, but “we cannot and will not tolerate antisemitism, Islamophobia, or hate of any kind.”

Ontario’s Premier also posted a comment, saying, “these acts of violence and expression of antisemitism have no place in Ontario.” Doug Ford goes on to say “discrimination or hatred of any kind against any community in our province should never be tolerated.”

Toronto’s mayor is commenting on the large protests at City Hall on the weekend.

John Tory says peaceful protests are welcome, but not during the stay at home order.

“Thank goodness we have the right to protest in our society and we hope that during this period of time that people wouldn’t have those large gatherings because they are against the law at this moment, against the stay at home health related law. We wish that more people would wear masks,” Tory explained on Monday morning.

At least until June 2nd, outdoor gatherings are only allowed when they are members of the same household.
