Ontario hospitals have been given permission to resume non-urgent surgeries and procedures.
The province’s chief medical officer of health says in a memo, he’s rescinding an emergency order issued almost one month ago; April 20th, that told hospitals to temporarily stop the procedures amid a then surge in cases.
But Dr. David Williams says daily rates, hospitalizations and ICU admissions appear to be trending downward.
He adds some hospitals now have capacity to resume cancelled procedures and points out it’s important to limit the long-term negative impact of waiting for NON-urgent care.
A spokesperson for the health minister says resumption of NON-urgent procedures won’t be province-wide as it will depend on a hospital’s capacity.
Ontario’s fiscal watchdog recently said it will take about 3 1/2-years to clear the surgical backlog caused by COVID.
The province is reporting there are 1,401 hospitalized with the virus.
735 are in ICUs and 539 on ventilators.
There are also 1,588 new cases.
524 are in Toronto, 335 in Peel Region and 94 in York.
