It’s good news for Ontario residents 80 and older and their loved ones.

Outbreak Response Coordinator Dr. Dirk Huyer says an update will be provided Friday on a revised length of time between first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccine for people 80 plus.

Dr. Huyer said on Thursday the announcement will be made as the province reaches an important milestone.

“There’s been a tremendous number of people that have been vaccinated, and we were just below 65-percent of the above 18 population vaccinated prior to sitting down today, and so we’ll be hoping that we’re over 65 today and we’re continuing to progress with doses across Ontario and various different age groups,” Dr. Huyer explained.

The current wait between first and second doses of COVID vaccine is 16 weeks, but there has been a push by a number of medical experts in recent days to reduce the wait time for older people, since are most at risk of developing severe symptoms of COVID-19, even after one dose of vaccine.

Some 26,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine had arrived at pharmacies in Toronto, Kingston and Windsor as of Thursday afternoon. They are to be used for second doses for those who got their first shots March 10th to 19th. Twelve-thousand additional doses are expected to be cleared Friday. All of these shots have expiry dates of end of day Monday.
