For some reason, the Royal Canadian Mint has deleted Nobel Laureate Sir Fredrick Banting from a coin, commemorating the discovery of insulin.
The mint is refusing to say why Banting was taken off the coin but the move follows a federal cabinet policy, adopted in 2019, to address colonialism, patriarchy and racism in history.
The mint will only say it produces commemorative coins as a means of assisting in the promotion of Canadian heritage as well as Canadian values, culture and history.
Insulin was discovered by Banting’s team at the University of Toronto in 1921 and has saved millions of lives since. Banting subsequently sold the patent to the University of Toronto for $1.00.
He died in a plane crash in 1941 at the age of 49.
