Premier Doug Ford is planning to keep schools closed for the remainder of the academic year though the decision still has to be finalized by cabinet according to sources. Outgoing Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams has been in favour of in-person learning but Ford has been hesitant. In the legislature, Education Minister Stephen Lecce repeated that schools are safe.

“Three out of four schools in the province did not have an active case of COVID-19 when we closed at the peak of the third wave.”

Schools have been closed for in-person learning since early April but calls have been growing louder in recent days to allow children to return to the classroom, if only for a few weeks.

A published report claims by keeping schools closed, Doug Ford can reopen the economy sooner the June 14th. The stay-home order expires at midnight.

And with the stay-at-home order expiring at midnight, all existing public health measures will remain in place province wide including a ban on indoor gatherings and outdoor capped at five.

Health Minister Christine Elliot would only speculate if the gradual reopening will start before the 14th of June.

“We’re anticipating that we will hit the milestones that we need to hit by June 14th, we don not anticipate it will be any later than that, whether we hit those markets sooner remains to be seen,” said Elliott. “We know we’ve hit the vaccination rate is 60 percent of adults over 18.”

An announcement on whether schools will reopen this month is expected Wednesday.
