The Crown says the vehicular attack in London where four members of a Muslim family were killed and one was injured while out for a walk June 6 was an act of terrorism.
20-year-old Nathaniel Veltman had been charged with four-counts of first-degree murder and one of attempted murder.
But Federal Crown Sarah Shaikh told court this morning that prosecutors have received consent from Canada’s attorney-general to go ahead with terrorism proceedings.
Veltman, who has not yet retained a lawyer, said he understood the new charges during a brief appearance via video.
The case returns to court June 21.
A friend of the family says upgrading the charges was ”the right thing to do.”
Saboor Khan says the family and community ”has been terrorized and many of us are afraid to leave our homes.”
