It’s not just good news, it’s great news!

The medical surgical intensive care unit at Toronto General Hospital has hit a celebratory milestone.

“Our first COVID case was March 26th, 2020 and today we are COVID free!” says a staff member surrounded by cheering teammates on a video that has been posted by the University Health Network.

But they are not alone. A day earlier, it was announced that the COVID-19 unit was being closed at Toronto Western, another hospital within UHN.

The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Ontario has declined significantly since the height of the pandemic’s third wave, when about 900 people were being treated for COVID in intensive care. As of Wednesday, 377 COVID positive patients were receiving treatment in Ontario hospital ICUs.

Ontario’s health minister and solicitor general are planning a 1pm Thursday update on the Ford government’s vaccine rollout, one day after the province confirmed two million Ontario residents have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
