Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says travel restrictions at the Canada-U.S. border must remain to prevent another wave.
The measures will remain in place until at least July 21.
Trudeau says it would take 75% of Canadians getting one COVID-19 vaccine dose and 20% receiving two before the rules can be relaxed, pointing out someone who’s fully immunized can infect someone who’s not.
In the short term the prime minister says the government plans to have Canadians upload proof of vaccination to the ArriveCan app so border agents can verify full immunization.
Trudeau adds the federal, provincial and territorial governments are also working to ”establish a national certification of vaccination status” for the fall that will be ”easily accepted around the world.”
