He’s 100 years old, lives in Newmarket, has completed a 100-kilometre fund raising journey and has been honoured for the effort.

Last year, when George Markow was just 99, he decided to walk 100 kilometres to raise money for Newmarket’s Southlake Regional Health Centre and Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital in support of COVID-19 research.

He choose Southlake because medical teams there cared for his wife before she died and Sunnybrook because he was treated there years ago for a brain bleed.

Markow did daily laps in the courtyard of his retirement home and when it got too cold he walked the hallways, raising thousands of dollars in the process.

Earlier this month he was presented with a York Region Citizen of Character Award which recognizes residents who’ve had an impact on their community and/or shown leadership with respect to positive character development.

George said he was honoured to receive the award and adds, all he did was walk.
