Richmond Hill’s Denis Shapovalov is through to his first Grand Slam semifinal after beating Russia’s Karen Khachanov in five sets at Wimbledon.
”Just super happy … it took a lot out of me but super, super proud of myself,” said the 22-year-old after the nearly 3 1/2 hour match.
The 22-year-old’s previous best performance at a Grand Slam was at last year’s U.S. Open, where he reached the quarterfinals.
Shapovalov will face top seed Novak Djokovic in one semifinal Friday.
Djokovic, who has won all six of their previous meetings, is pursuing 6th Wimbledon championship along with a 20th Grand Slam title, which would tie the men’s record currently shared by Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
Federer, an 8-time Wimbledon champ, lost in straight sets to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals.
Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime missed a chance to join Shapovalov in the final four after losing in four-sets to Italy’s Matteo Berrettini.
