Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is joining leaders from around the world in condemning the overnight assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise.
”I strongly condemn the appalling assassination of President Moise,” Trudeau said on Twitter.
”Canada stands ready to support the people of Haiti and offer any assistance they need.”
The 53-year-old Moise was shot by unidentified gunmen at his private home early Wednesday local time.
His wife was also shot and is receiving medical treatment.
The murder follows months of gang violence, anti-government protests and a recent surge in COVID-19 infections.
Haiti is the largest recipient of development assistance from Canada in the Americas and Canada is the second biggest donor to Haiti after the U.S.
