A home-care nurse has filed an Ontario human rights complaint against her employer claiming it failed to protect her from being sexually assaulted by a patient. A Hamilton-based non-profit that provides home and community care is at the centre of the case.

The nurse alleges the Victoria Order of Nurses Canada didn’t warn her the patient had a history of harassing and sexually assaulting nursing staff and women before sending her alone to his home three years ago.

The complaint says the agency’s actions and policies amount to systemic discrimination by failing to protect its largely female staff.

The nurse says the incident has left her traumatized and brought her career to a standstill.

VON Canada hasn’t commented citing patient confidentiality.
