There’s been yet another discovery of unmarked graves at the site of a former residential “school” in Canada.

The Penelakut Tribe says it has found more than 160 graves as the former site of the Kuper Island Indian Industrial School.

There is no word yet on how the graves were found, whether children’s remains are suspected of being buried there or whether ground-penetrating radar was used.

The building was demolished in the 1980s after operating as a “school” from 1890 to 1975.

The discovery is not surprising. It’s long been known there are graves at the site. The school has well documented stories of abuses with several instances of students drowning while trying to swim away from the island. In fact, the “school” was referenced as Alcatraz, since it was on an island much like the infamous U.S. prison near San Francisco.

There have been a series of similar discoveries of mass unmarked graves at the sites of former residential schools in B.C. and Saskatchewan.
