Homeless advocates have written an open letter to Mayor John Tory and city council urging them to find a better way to deal with encampments in city parks.

The letter  titled A PATH FORWARD and signed by more than 200 organizations, community leaders and other advocates calls on the Mayor to end the use-of-force and to adopt a more compassionate approach when dealing with the homeless.

“The only reason the police were ever involved in any of the previous activities was because people who were there to protest the fact that these encampments would in any be be altered were causing a danger to city workers and the people experiencing homelessness because of unrest,” said Tory.

The group is asking Mayor Tory to put the letter on the agenda of today’s council meeting and adopt its recommendations.
