Nearly 24-hours to the moment a tornado tore through Barrie, Doug Ford had a chance to see the extent of damage first-hand.

”Absolutely, first heart wrenching, but it’s devastating and thank God no one was killed.  It’s an absolute miracle,” said the premier.

Ten people were taken to hospital and all but two have been released.

The city’s fire chief says about 25 homes were damaged, levelling two or three.

”We’ll be here supporting them.  If insurance doesn’t cover, then we’ll step up and help them out,” Ford added as he toured the devastated neighbourhood.

The tornado brought back memories for 70-year-old Judy Arksey.

A tornado in Barrie in 1985 killed eight and injured over 100.

Hundreds of homes in the Allendale neighbourhood were destroyed.

Arksey says the community’s come together just like it did 36 years ago.

She spent two weeks after that tornado helping out however she could at the church.

”I’m too old to do that this time.”
