Things got tense Wednesday afternoon when Toronto police moved into Lamport Stadium in Liberty Village to clear out a homeless shelter and several arrests have been made.

The scene became quite charged as police brought in additional reinforcements both on foot and horse.

Staff Sgt. Randy Carter says the dozen who live in the encampment and their supporters were warned that trespass notices would be enforced and that police moved in with “the least amount of force.”

“We spent the better part of the day talking with everybody, let’s move along, let’s move along and we do our best to get to a place where nobody gets hurt and where we don’t have to be physically fighting with people and you were all witness to how we had to get to that place today.” said Sgt. Carter.

Supporters and advocates pushed back before police were able to clear the park but emotions continued to run high until mid afternoon.

One officer and a city security guard received minor injuries, sprayed by an ‘unkown substance.’

A number of scuffles broke out between police and the group who gathered in the park resulting in 22 arrests.
