The federal NDP defence critic calls it disturbing that Canada’s current top soldier wrote a glowing performance review for Maj.-General Dany Fortin, when he had apparently known for months that Fortin was under investigation by military police.
Randall Garrison says it’s another example of senior military leaders ignoring the importance of taking these allegations seriously.
It came to light Thursday that acting Chief of Defence Staff Lt.-Gen. Wayne Eyre had signed a rave review on May 11th of Fortin’s work, all the while recommending he be promoted right away and given a command position.
It was 3 days later, May 14th, Fortin was removed from the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, just five days before the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service referred a sexual misconduct investigation to the Quebec prosecution service.
Dany Fortin himself says he has done nothing wrong and that his reputation has been irreparably tarnished by the Trudeau government’s decision to abruptly replace him as the head of Canada’s vaccine rollout campaign.
Fortin’s assertion is contained in an affidavit sworn last week, but only publicly revealed Thursday as part of his legal battle to reverse his dismissal from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
