The Trudeau government’s promising to quickly resettle Afghan interpreters and others who helped the Canadian Armed Forces during the war, and are now at risk from the Taliban.
Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino says Ottawa wants to do right by those who helped Canada carry out its mission in Afghanistan.
”The risk of retribution from the Taliban is grave.  Afghans who have supported Canada are routinely and deliberately subject to threats of violence, torture and death as are their families,” adds Mendicino.
”Lives hang in the balance here which is why we are taking timely and decisive action.”
Among those eligible for the special immigration measures are former interpreters and translators who worked with the military, as well as cooks, drivers and other staff employed at the Canadian Embassy.
Mendicino expects ”several thousand” Afghans will be eligible to come here.
No word how they will be evacuated or when as government officials cite privacy and safety concerns.
Canada’s military involvement in Afghanistan formally ended seven years ago.
