Healthcare workers in France are now mandated to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

They have until September 15th to start getting vaccinated, or risk suspension.

The French government, under Emmanuel Macron, has rushed the vaccine mandate through parliament after it was unveiled six days ago.

The bill also sets up a “health pass” for citizens of France to access restaurants, sports stadiums and other public venues.

To get the pass, people must have proof they are fully vaccinated, recently tested negative or recently recovered from the virus.

Both measures have prompted protests and political tensions. President Macron says they are needed to protect vulnerable populations and hospitals as infections rebound and to avoid new lockdowns.

Here in Ontario, Premier Doug Ford has refused to consider the idea of making COVID-19 vaccination mandatory for healthcare workers, despite a lobby by the Ontario Medical Association, the Registered Nurses of Ontario and his own COVID-19 science advisory table. Ford is also against having the province issue any kind of vaccine passport or certificate.
