You’re being warned that the country may be on the brink of another wave; driven by the highly contagious Delta variant, if Canada opens too fast before enough Canadians are immunized.
The warning comes from the country’s chief public health officer who’s issuing a ”call for arms.”
With just over five weeks until Labour Day, Dr. Theresa Tam wants to see an increase in vaccination.
”This means increasing fully vaccinated coverage above 80% across all age groups,” says Tam.
”But particularly in younger age groups, where most of the transmission is occurring. Today’s modelling underscores that increasing first and second dose uptick in young adults can have a big impact in building up better protection for the fall and winter.”
Tam adds it’s important to build up protection before we start to gather again in schools, colleges, universities and workplaces.
Meanwhile, she says Alberta’s decision to end isolation requirements for those who test positive or who’ve been in close contact with someone who has, could have ripple effects across Canada.
