One of Canada’s most high-profile Conservative women is resigning from the Senate.

The Toronto Star is reporting Linda Frum will retire later this month, 12 years to the day after she was appointed by then Prime Minister Stephen Harper to represent Ontario.

In an interview, Frum said her decision has nothing to do with the likelihood of an upcoming federal  election, noting that she informed the current Conservative party Leader a year ago that she intended to leave at the end of this summer.

The 58-year old says that she is ready for a new chapter in her life.

Frum currently serves as the chair of the board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Toronto and with the current rise in antisemitism she feels compelled to focus her attention on promoting and protecting Jewish life.

Frum was a journalist and author prior to her appointment to the Senate.
