Saying the ‘surge is upon us’ Toronto Mayor John Tory says there needs to be a plan regarding mandatory vaccinations rather than a patchwork of policies.
“You know the UHN hospital model where they said get vaccinated or get tested seems like a fair thing that gives people a choice but the bottom line is somebody has to come up with some kind of plan,” said Tory.
“I think that’s more for the province but look if the federal government is going to have some regulations the Prime Minister hinted at, that’s fine but we need an overall plan.”
There have been growing calls to mandate vaccinations for healthcare and education workers but the province has no plan to do so.
The government’s also refusing to implement a vaccine passport system allowing access to some non-essential activities.
Meanwhile the city’s urging the more than 193,500 Toronto residents due or overdue for a second shot to get it as soon as possible.
Currently, nearly 72% of eligible Torontonians are fully immunized.
