Political leaders around the province are remembering former Ontario Premier Bill Davis who died Sunday morning at the age of 92.

Speaking on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer,  Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown fondly recalled his mentor.

“He’s beloved in Brampton and his friendship and advice and on a municipal level have meant the world and I really believe he is the gold standard when it comes to public service.”

Toronto Mayor John Tory says Bill Davis leaves a legacy.”His greatest achievement, they are the education system, the post secondary education system, and the full respect granted to people whose rights and freedoms through the Charter of Rights and Freedoms of which he was one of the principle architects in making sure we had one.”

Premier Doug Ford tweeted, “My deepest condolences to the family of William G. Davis, Ontario’s 18th premier. He served the people of Ontario with dignity and class. We will be lowering flags to half-mast across the province in his honour.

And this evening from 9 p.m to 10 p.m. Niagara Falls will be lit blue in honour of the late Davis.

Shortly after his death, his family released a statement that reads in part “After spending much family time in his favourite of all places, his cottage in Georgian Bay, he died of natural causes at home in Brampton surrounded by members of his family.”

Davis remained active in politics even in his later years endorsing Christine Elliott’s 2014 bid to become Ontario PC Party leader and Patrick Brown’s run for Mayor of Brampton in 20-18.

He served as Ontario’s Premier for 14 years from 1971 to 1985.

Bill Davis was 92.
