Justin Trudeau is expected to pay a visit to Governor General Mary Simon Sunday and ask her to dissolve Parliament, setting an election campaign in motion.
Canadians are expected to go to the polls September 20.
Some sources say that’s the plan ”for now” but that the prime minister may also decide to make the call Monday, or later.
Casting a shadow over the plan is a warning from Canada’s chief public health officer.
Dr. Theresa Tam says new COVID cases have doubled the past two weeks among the unvaccinated — especially those in the 20 to 39 age group.
Currently, there are more than 13,000 active cases across the country with the Delta variant driving a fourth wave.
As for the election, whenever it’s called, Tam says any campaign and election voting organizations will have to follow local public health guidelines.
