As Afghanistan comes closer to falling to the Taliban, Ottawa is working to resettle thousands who could face violent retribution.

Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino confirmed the operation earlier this afternoon.

The Taliban has made lighting quick gains, taking over provincial capital after provincial capital (including Kandahar, their former stronghold).

About 20,000 people will be resettled in all, including female leaders, human rights workers and journalists. This will be in addition to translators and embassy workers that were already in the process of being moved.

When they ruled Afghanistan, the Taliban were known for their draconian punishments and its feared there would be deadly retribution against those who worked with Canadians and other western forces.

Afghan government forces have crumbled in a short period of time after about 20 years of support by American, British, Canadian and other NATO members.

The U.S. is just weeks away from withdrawing its remaining troops in the country.
