Canada and the United States continue an attempt to rescue as many Afghans as possible. Canada is no longer requiring passports or COVID-19 negative tests for people boarding flights out of Kabul.
Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino says it’s part of Ottawa’s efforts to accelerate the process for the families of interpreters and others who supported Canada’s mission in Afghanistan.
A plane full of Afghan refugees took off from Kabul last night, but Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau didn’t say how many were on board.
South of the border, President Joe Biden sent a message to Americans still in Afghanistan. “We will get you home.”
The U-S is struggling to ramp up its evacuation of all Americans and Afghans who assisted the war effort and their close family members.
Biden is facing criticism for the chaos outside the airport in Kabul, with some veterans calling on him to extend a security perimeter beyond the airport so more Afghans can make it there.
Tens of thousands of people remain to be evacuated ahead of the August 31st deadline to withdraw U-S troops from the country.
