Toronto’s Ryerson University will be the country’s first major post-secondary school to change its name amid the debate over the honouring of historical figures.
That recommendation comes from a special task force which examined the legacy of its namesake; Egerton Ryerson, an architect of Canada’s residential school system.
More than 1,300 unmarked graves of Indigenous children have been located on the former sites of residential schools this summer.
Over the last year, students, faculty and staff have become increasingly vocal about their desire to see Ryerson University renamed.
The school will now begin the process of selecting a new name, which could be chosen in time for the start of the next academic year – September 2022.
