Increased vaccinations figure prominently in new COVID-19 federal modelling, which shows Delta variants continue to accelerate across Canada.
Canada’s chief public health officer says more than 53M doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered since the campaign began in mid-December.
Dr. Theresa Tam says over 84 per cent of the eligible population 12 years and older have had at least one dose of vaccine and 77 per cent are fully vaccinated, but says pushing those rates higher will be crucial to battling the fourth wave.
“The bottom line is that millions of people across Canada remain unvaccinated, and that’s high risk of COVID-19 infections and severe illness outcomes,” said Dr. Tam. “There is still time to get vaccinated to protect yourself and others while helping to preserve our healthcare capacity through the fall and winter.”
Tam says since the previous modelling update, the numbers have risen from just over 640 new cases per day nationally, to almost 3,500 today.
