With traffic levels across the city back to 75% pre-COVID, and even more congestion expected as some return to offices while kids go back to class, Toronto’s mayor has unveiled a plan to safely manage gridlock.
”We are examining the traffic data and making any operational improvements necessary to ensure people can move quickly, reliably and safely through the city,” John Tory announced.
Nearly a dozen initiatives make up the plan, including traffic agents returning to ”hot spots” like the Gardiner on-ramps at University Avenue, and on Bay and Front Streets.
The installation of more than 900 pieces of technology valuable to real-time traffic data will be accelerated.
The number of rush-hour construction exemptions are being reduced while school crossing guards are being deployed to 765 locations.
Tory says the city’s also keeping an eye on an increase in delivery vehicles and trying to persuade businesses to move deliveries to off-peak hours.
