The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office, Ontario Ministry of Labour and Toronto Police are investigating what caused an explosion at an East York chemical plant and the fire that followed.
Firefighters were called to Siltech Corporation on Wicksteed Avenue at Beth Nealson Drive, north of Thorncliffe Park, shortly before 10 a.m.
One worker died at the scene while a man in his 40s was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Acting Fire Chief Jim Jessop says these kinds of fires are much more difficult to put out ”because you have to pick a specific extinguishing agent in relation to the chemicals that are on fire.”
