The city of Toronto says more people have been rolling up their sleeves to be vaccinated since the province announced the vaccine certificate program.

Since August 31st, the city has seen an 18% rise in people getting their first COVID-19 doses.

Mayor John Tory is urging this to continue saying the end is in sight.

“We are closer to the end of this pandemic than to the beginning,” Tory said at the city’s COVID-19 update on Wednesday. “I’ve had an occasion to speak as I will tomorrow about events that really mark the reopening and the gradual back to normal status of our economy. I’m very optimistic about the city and its economic future.”

The city’s goal is to have 90% of eligible people fully vaccinated against the virus.

As of late Tuesday Toronto’s full vaccination rate is at 77.6% while 83.6% have a first dose.

Toronto’s medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa can’t predict how much longer it will take to get to 90% but the city is still making progress.

“To get to 90% fully vaccinated here in Toronto, we need another 336,000 more people to get vaccinated,” said de Villa. “We’ve seen those numbers consistently come down with the vaccination efforts out there.”

The city has been targeting neighborhoods with lower vaccinated rates with mobile clinics and some cases, even going door to door.
