Not one, but two Canadians are the semi-finals of the U.S. Open tennis grand slam!
Both from Quebec, 19 year old Leylah Annie Fernandez and 21 year old Feliz Auger-Aliassime are still in contention in the singles draws after winning their quarter-final matches in the New York tourney.
After already knocking out former U.S. Open champions Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber, Fernandez beat fifth-seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 to advance to the women’s semifinals.
Auger-Aliassime won his match after unseeded 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz withdrew in the second set due to injury.
There are no Americans left competing in the singles events at the U.S. Open.
Ottawa’s Gaby Dabrowski plays in the quarter-finals of the women’s doubles scheduled for noon on Wednesday.
Fernandez plays her semi-final match on Thursday against the number 2 seed, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus. Auger-Aliassime plays number 2 seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia.
