A remarkable run to the U.S. Open final is ending in disappointment for Canada’s Leylah Fernandez.
The 19-year-old left-hander from Montreal dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to British qualifier Emma Raducanu in Saturday’s women’s singles final at Flushing Meadows.
Raducanu is the youngest Grand Slam champion since 17-year-old Maria Sharapova won at Wimbledon in 2004.
Just a few points before closing out the match, Raducanu took a medical timeout after she cut her knee on the hardcourt while returning a shot.
Ranked 150th in the world at the start of the tournament, Raducanu – a Toronto native who moved to England at age two – didn’t drop a set in the tournament.
Fernandez, the world Number 73, defeated three top-five players en route to the final.
She was hoping to become the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title since Bianca Andreescu won the U.S. Open in 2019.
