With this election falling in a pandemic, Elections Canada made available a special mail-in ballot for those not wanting to go to an in-person polling station.

It was a very generic ballot where the elector would have to write in their candidate of choice. It would be counted after the in-person ballots are counted.

Millions were expected to request the ballot leading to fears the results in some ridings wouldn’t be known until after election night.

It appears those worries may be unfounded with Elections Canada saying fewer ballots were requested than they anticipated.

“It’s just over a million–almost 1.1-million,” said Dugald Maudsley, the Elections Canada regional media advisor for the GTA on the number of ballots requested. “It’s definitely less than the 2-3 million Elections Canada was anticipating and was preparing for.”

Maudsley says there could still be a delay in finalizing results. The process to verify and officially count mail-in ballots starts the day after the election so if there’s a riding that has a high number of mail-in ballots that’s a close race, results may not be known for a day or two.
