An app for COVID-19 vaccine certification in Ontario is said to be on track to be released October 22nd.

The governing Ford Progressive Conservatives at Queen’s Park have opted to have the Ontario Digital Service build the app itself, rather than hire a private sector company to do so, as has been the case in other provinces.

The vaccine certificate program officially begins a week from today, September 22nd, when individuals will need to show Ministry of Health proof of vaccination receipts along with photo identification to access non-essential businesses like theatres, restaurants and gyms.

The new system for October 22nd is to be linked with the provincial COVAX database. When a QR code is scanned, those allowing access to non-essential businesses will see a check mark or an X. Information about legitimate medical exemptions will also be embedded in the system.

As for those individuals who do not have a smartphone, they will be allowed to continue showing the proof of vaccine receipts.

And if business owners are being hassled for not allowing unvaccinated people into their establishments, Health Minister Christine Elliott says they are urged to call 9-11

In addition, the Ford Tories have laid out a number of scenarios where you don’t actually need proof of COVID vaccination.

Here’s a list of those exemptions:

Between Sept. 22 and Oct. 12, the province says that a negative antigen COVID-19 test – taken no more than 48 hours prior – can be used to gain access to an indoor social gathering associated with a wedding or funeral
