Now that a Liberal minority has been declared for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, there are questions about how pressing issues for seniors will be handled.

How will the feds work with the provinces to fix a long term care system that was overwhelmed during the pandemic?

Will the government be prepared for the oncoming age wave by championing and funding a home care system that works for all Canadians.

David Cravit is a demographic expert and chief membership officer of CARP – a new vision of aging.

He told Zoomer Radio News, he’s not feeling optimistic about the future of long term care and home care based on what was said during the campaign.

“It was an opportunity for all of the parties to voice essentially the same pieties and to postpone and real in-depth discussion of the deeper issues, notably healthcare, which ranked very high in voter concerns which was addressed in the most elementary simplistic way,” Cravit explained.

Cravit says unfortunately a minority government that is trying to stay in power likely won’t have the time or the appetite to tackle such complex issues.

In addition, Canada will soon have a new seniors minister since Deb Schulte lost her re-election bid in the riding of King-Vaughan.

Listen for more on the current situation and future of long term care on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer Wednesday after the noon news.
