An increase in cases of a rare heart condition in young adults; particularly men who’ve received the Moderna vaccine, is prompting the Ford government to recommend Pfizer shots for the 18-24 age group.
”This decision was made out of an abundance of caution due to a very small, but observed increase of pericarditis or myocarditis following vaccination with Moderna, as compared to the Pfizer vaccine in this age group, particularly among males,” explains Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kieran Moore.
Two of Dr. Moore’s three sons in this age group received the Moderna vaccine.
Between June and August, the province says the risk of either heart condition for males 18-24 after a second dose of Moderna was one-in-5,000.
For those who got the Pfizer shot, the rate was one-in-28,000.
Dr. Moore stresses the risk is low and reported cases are mild with people recovering quickly.
