Cardinal Thomas Collins repeated his apology for residential schools during a special prayer service today at Toronto’s St. Michael’s Cathedral on Canada’s inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

“Today, we particularly resolve to repent for the lack of respect shown to the Indigenous People of this land, especially evident in the residential schools,” said Cardinal Collins in the service that’s been uploaded to Youtube

“The distance of time can give us clear understanding of sins and failures.”

Collins said the church needs to look to the past to acknowledge the truth, even it’s painful.

He ended his homily by reading the recent apology to Indigenous Peoples by the Canadian Conference of Bishops’ in which they acknowledged the suffering experienced in residential schools, many of which were run by Catholic organizations.

The Bishops are urging the Pope to visit Canada as part of this healing journey.
