Our protection against COVID-19 has been bolstered by vaccines, but Chief medical health officer Dr. Theresa Tam says we need to think about the return of other respiratory infections like the flu, that could make a comeback this year.

“In addition to getting up to date with recommended vaccines, such as influenza, and other routine vaccines for children and adults, we can stay healthier by keeping up with hand and cough hygiene practices, getting the best ventilation possible in our indoor spaces, and staying home and away from others if we develop symptoms.”

Tam says we’re already starting to see some of the usual respiratory viruses returning this fall.

She also says the Delta variant is moving the goal post on the rate of vaccination needed to reach herd immunity as the target will vary depending on population density and other factors.

Last month, Tam said she’d like to see all age groups at least 80 per cent fully vaccinated as soon as possible to fight the surge in cases.
