As the governing Ford PCs at Queen’s Park open long term care legislation for the first time in more than a decade, advocates are calling for “emotion focussed care” that puts residents’ needs first.
The current Long Term Care Act offers nothing to uphold a resident’s right of friendship or the freedom to choose how they spend their day.
Staff with the Ministry of Long Term Care are opening the act this fall with the expectation a requirement of an average of four hours of daily care by 2024-25 will be added, along with tougher enforcement rules.
Recently, Long Term Care Minister Rod Phillips announced the four hours a day of daily care could come in the next few months, and on Friday, Phillips announced he had issued a directive to make COVID vaccinations mandatory for all long term care staff.
But the province cannot fire or suspend long term care workers who don’t get vaccinated because they’re employed by the individual operators or municipality.
