A letter written by founding father Alexander Hamilton during the Revolutionary War has been returned to the state of Massachusetts.

The letter by the first Secretary of the Treasury whose profile soared because of the hit Broadway musical, appears to detail the movements of British forces.

It was stolen decades ago by an employee in the Massachusetts archives and was returned following a federal appeals court decision.

But the estate of the person who possessed the letter claimed it had been purchased legally, but the court disagreed.
