TTC confirms it’ll suspend and eventually fire employees who do not follow the transit agency’s mandatory vaccination policy and get their shots.
The deadline to do so has been pushed back from October 30 to November 20.
The TTC says any workers who are not immunized or have not shared their status by then will be placed on unpaid leave until they are vaccinated.
Any employees who remain unvaccinated or have not confirmed their status by December 31 will be terminated.
The TTC says it’s ”unfortunate” these steps have to be taken, but CEO Rick Leary says the TTC is ”an essential service” and it needs ”to be a safe place for everyone.”
The TTC’s making contingency plans to avoid service disruptions after it expects to start the suspensions, including expediting new hiring, recalling retirees and increasing overtime.
But the transit agency concedes starting November 21, service ”may need to be reduced depending on staff availability.”
Should that happen, the TTC says ”the priority will be to ensure reliable and predictable service continues on the busiest routes at the busiest times of day.”
