The Ford government has renewed its support of for-profit long term care homes in the province.

In Question Period today at Queen’s Park, Long Term Care Minister Rod Phillips says allowing more for profit beds in the province is part of their plan to increase capacity in Ontario.

“We have a plan to create new long term care beds,” said Phillips. “Our plan focuses almost $3-billion on building those new long term care beds. Through the last allocation of long term care beds, 2/3 of those were for the not-for-profit sector. We will make sure there was not-for-profit, municipal and yes, for-profit beds.”

NDP deputy leader Sara Singh says the Tories are rewarding their supporters despite the pandemic showing the problem with the for-profit long term care model.

Philipps says investing billions into the construction of homes is better than the NDP’s plan to spend the money simply buying homes from for profit operators to make them public.

He says that would leave no money to create new spaces.
