A white, male teacher at Parkdale Collegiate Institute has been placed on home assignment after wearing blackface Friday during Halloween celebrations.
Part of a letter from Principal Julie Ardell to parents and guardians reads, ”caricatures of peoples’ faces and culture are not appropriate and are offensive and hurtful.”
The incident came to light after several students reported it to the vice-principal.
One student says when the class asked what his costume was, the teacher became defensive and said it ”looked cool.”
The principal says the teacher will remain on home assignment while the Toronto District School Board investigates his actions.
While parents ”commend the principal” for taking action and listening to students, they believe current policy and protocols are not enough, they’re calling on the TDSB to do more.
