Canada will put a lid on oil and gas sector emissions until they fall to net-zero by 2050.
Justin Trudeau made the pledge at the international climate conference in Glasgow, where over 120 world leaders have gathered.
He calls it ”a major commitment” that should inspire other resource-rich countries to do something about their emissions.
”That’s no small task for a major oil and gas producing country. It’s a big step that’s absolutely necessary,” Trudeau told the summit.
As British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, U.S. President Joe Biden and others listened, Trudeau referred to the fire that destroyed a B.C. community in June after a record setting heatwave.
”What happened in Lytton can and has and will happen anywhere. How many more signs do we need?,” the prime minister asked.
