An Inuk writer, who teaches at the University of Alberta, is this year’s winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award for Fiction.

61-year old Norma Dunning receives the $25-thousand prize for her book of short stories, “Tainna; The Unseen Ones.”

She say the win is the validation of her lifelong dedication to writing. and her dedication to highlighting indigenous causes…

“Tainna” centres on the experiences of modern-day Inuit living outside their home territories which the author says challenges readers’ perceptions of what Inuit life looks like.

The Governor General’s literary prizes are awarded yearly across seven categories in both English and French.
