The province is looking into four more possible cases of the Omicron variant of concern that’s led to travel restrictions worldwide.
Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore says the first cases, found in patients in Ottawa who’d recently returned from Nigeria after flying into Montreal, were discovered through random testing.
Two of the possible cases being investigated are in Hamilton and two others are in Ottawa.
”So I would not be surprised if we find more in Ontario because we’ve got a very robust surveillance system, a great testing capacity,” said Dr. Moore.
The province is performing genome sequencing on all positive COVID-19 tests, which the top medical officer says will help detect possible variant cases.
Dr. Moore says public health units are reaching out to 375 who’ve returned from countries Ottawa considers high risk for the variant and are offering them testing.
Once again, he says Ontario would like to offer testing to all returning travellers, not only those from the seven designated countries in southern Africa.
